Access and Eligibility
Embrace lives up to its name as an inclusive and welcoming pet insurance plan, with no breed restrictions. Most pets with Embrace are protected by their accident and illness policy, which covers dogs and cats from 6 weeks to 15 years of age. Because of the many age-related illnesses, newly enrolled pets 15 years and older are eligible only for the accident-only policy.
Embrace requires a veterinary exam in the 12 months prior to enrollment, or 14 days after establishing the pet’s policy, plus any available medical history for the previous 12 months.
Embrace’s coverage has one downside: lengthy waiting periods. While accident coverage begins sooner than most other companies—after only two days—illness expenses are not covered for 14 days, and a six-month waiting period is required for canine orthopedic coverage, although, with a veterinary orthopedic exam and waiver, the waiting period can be reduced to 14 days.

The Embrace accident and illness policy is so comprehensive that no additional riders or illness add-ons are necessary for complete coverage. Embrace offers only two policies and one add-on wellness package:

- Wellness Rewards program — Wellness Rewards is a flexible preventive care program that is offered with the accident and illness plan, and reimburses wellness services and training costs, and pet care up to $650 annually.

Embrace boasts a nose-to-tail accident and illness policy. Unlike some competitors, Embrace covers exam and consultation fees, all new forms of cancer, hereditary and congenital conditions, behavior therapy, complementary treatments, and dental services up to $1,000 per year. This coverage is in addition to the expected protection for emergency and specialty medicine, surgery, hospitalization, diagnostics, medication, and orthopedic injury. Chronic and preventable conditions are also covered, with no per-condition payout limits.
The Short List: Plan Exclusions
Like any pet insurance company, Embrace does not cover pre-existing conditions. However, if your pet’s condition is considered “curable,” they need no treatment, and are symptom-free for 12 months, Embrace may reinstate their coverage. Embrace policies never cover the following:
- DNA testing
- Bilateral orthopedic conditions (e.g., hip dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament rupture), if one side was diagnosed prior to enrollment
- Breeding costs
- Cosmetic procedures (e.g., cropping, docking)
- Routine veterinary care, unless part of Wellness Rewards
